No one who was in Sala Santa Cecilia on 28 January 2012 will be able to forget the smashing performance of acrobatic Austrian percussionist Martin Grubinger. This amazing concert hits the Italian music scene again on 31 January, and 1/3 February 2015 in the Auditorium Parco della Musica.
Composer/conductor Peter Eötvös couldn’t help noticing Grubinger’s talent and skill; thus, his Speaking Drums Concerto – the title refers to the long-distance communication system of sounds and rhythms used by Native Americans – was created especially for, and dedicated to, Grubinger. Percussion instruments are always engaging for audiences, maybe because of their ancestral pull, but this family of instruments has been enjoying even greater, more significant space in contemporary music of late. It’s a show you won’t want to miss.
