{"id":44660,"date":"2022-03-19T20:54:49","date_gmt":"2022-03-19T20:54:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.romeing.it\/florence\/three-pietas-by-michelangelo-exhibition-in-florence\/"},"modified":"2025-11-25T09:54:44","modified_gmt":"2025-11-25T09:54:44","slug":"three-pietas-by-michelangelo-exhibition-in-florence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.romeing.it\/florence\/three-pietas-by-michelangelo-exhibition-in-florence\/","title":{"rendered":"The Three Piet\u00e0s by Michelangelo in Exhibition in Florence"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-first-reunion-of-the-three-pietas-sculptures-by-michelangelo\">The first reunion of the three Piet\u00e0s sculptures by Michelangelo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The exhibition \u201c<strong>The Three Piet\u00e0s of Michelangelo: No one thinks of how much blood it costs<\/strong>\u201d will be on display at the <strong>Museo dell\u2019Opera del Duomo<\/strong> until <strong>August 1, 2022<\/strong>.&nbsp; This exhibition is without a doubt one of the main art events of the spring in Florence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the first time, the <strong>three Piet\u00e0s<\/strong> (representation of the Virgin Mary mourning her son Jesus) sculpted by the famous artist <strong>Michelangelo<\/strong> are reunited for a special exhibition in Florence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the <strong>Tribuna di Michelangelo<\/strong> inside the museum, the three statues are on display close to each other to highlight them, allowing the visitors to have an overview of the artist\u2019s talent. The exhibition gives the opportunity to see the evolution of the artist\u2019s art and his state of mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.romeing.it\/florence\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/bandini-pieta-di-Michelangelo_ph_Andrea_Paoletti-1024x684.jpg\" alt=\"bandini-pieta\u0300-di-Michelangelo_ph_Andrea_Paoletti\" class=\"wp-image-2335\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ph. Andrea Paoletti<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bandini Piet\u00e0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Bandini Piet\u00e0<\/strong>, positioned in the centre of the&nbsp;<em>Tribuna di Michelangelo<\/em>, was already in the spotlight in 2021 with its <strong>restoration<\/strong> realized by the museum thanks to a contribution from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.friendsofflorence.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Friends of Florence association<\/a>. This marble sculpture, realized between <strong>1547 and 1555<\/strong> is probably the most complex of the three. The statue\u2019s four figures, including the elderly Nicodemus bearing Michelangelo\u2019s face, were carved from a single marble block that stands over two metres high and weighs approximately 2,700 kilograms.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.romeing.it\/florence\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/pieta-vaticano-Michelangelo_ph_Andrea_Paoletti-1024x684.jpg\" alt=\"pieta\u0300-vaticano-Michelangelo_ph_Andrea_Paoletti\" class=\"wp-image-2334\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ph. Andrea Paoletti<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vatican Piet\u00e0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Coming directly from the Vatican Museum, the <strong>Vatican Piet\u00e0 (1489-1499)<\/strong> was first commissioned by the Cardinal Jean Bilh\u00e8ers de Lagraulas whose instructions were to depict \u201cthe Virgin Mary, dressed, with the Dead Christ naked in her arms\u201d.&nbsp; The famous marble sculpture was first placed in the chapel of Santa Petronilla and was then moved to the <strong>Saint Peter\u2019s Basilica<\/strong> in the 18<sup>th<\/sup> century. Andrea Paoletti<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rondanini Piet\u00e0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, the <strong>Rondanini Piet\u00e0<\/strong> is a work of art that kept Michelangelo busy until the last day of his life. Started in<strong> 1552 <\/strong>this sculpture was never really finished and is largely influenced by the artist\u2019s general state of mind. The artist in the last years of his life who was extremely focused on religion and on his relationship to God. Unlike the two other Piet\u00e0s, this one represents the <strong>Virgin Mary and the Christ<\/strong> in a more ghostly way with elongated postures which seems to reveal a detachment from the real world. The sculpture was bought by the Marquis Giuseppe Rondinini in 1744 and is placed in the <strong>Castello Sforzesco in Milan <\/strong>since 1952.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This exhibition is curated by the museum directors Barbara Jatta, Sergio Risaliti, Claudio Salsi and Timothy Verdon.
