Beginning in the mid-19th century, the building became one of the first public museums in the city, renowned for an impressive collection of Renaissance sculptures by some of history\u2019s most important artists \u2013 <strong>Michelangelo, Donatello, Robbia, Cellini<\/strong>. Today, the museum is a must-see for anyone who wishes to step into the heart of Florence\u2019s celebrated art and history and be transported back in time to the <strong>Renaissance<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f0f2f4\"><span style=\"color: #dd3333;\"><strong>INSPIRATION<\/strong><\/span><br><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.romeing.it\/florence\/combined-tickets-galleria-accademia-bargello-museums-florence\/\">Combined tickets now in place at the Galleria dell\u2019Accademia di Firenze and Bargello Museums<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Palazzo<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.romeing.it\/florence\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/museo-del-bargello-courtyard.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4255\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon entering the museum, one steps into the open courtyard, the first ever public palazzo in Florence designed by <strong>Lapo di Cambio<\/strong>. Enriched with an extensive history, the courtyard underwent several architectural and functional renovations until its ultimate transformation into a museum in the 19th century. A tranquil area that invites contemplation and curiosity, the courtyard houses several breathtaking sculptures, including <strong>Bartolomeo Ammannati\u2019s<\/strong> impressive <strong><em>Fountain for the Sala Grande<\/em><\/strong>commissioned by<strong> Cosimo I de\u2019 Medici <\/strong>in the mid-16th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to marveling at the awe-inspiring sculptures and soaking in the serenity of the palazzo, one can enjoy the historical <strong>coats of arms<\/strong> adorning the courtyard which were left by <strong>Capitani del Popolo, Podesta, and Giudici di Rota <\/strong>between the 14th and 16th centuries. The coats of arms stand as a testament to some of the most influential families and figures in Florentine history, intricately crafted with unique designs. In its entirety, the palazzo serves as an integral piece of the museum and a window into the often turbulent and fascinating past of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Michelangelo and 16th-Century Sculpture Room<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>After spending some time in the palazzo, one moves into <strong>The Michelangelo and 16th-Century Sculpture Room<\/strong>, which houses some of the most significant works of the Renaissance crafted by illustrious artists such as <strong>Michelangelo, Cellini, Ammannati, Giambologna and Bandinelli.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.romeing.it\/florence\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Bacchus-Michelangelo-bargello-museum.jpg\" alt=\"Bacchus-Michelangelo-bargello-museum\" class=\"wp-image-3856\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Four of Michelangelo\u2019s sculptures are featured in the room. <strong><em>The Bacchus (1496\/97), <\/em><\/strong>one of the artist\u2019s first Roman works, stands at the heart of the space, immediately commanding attention. Originally commissioned for the cardinal<strong> Raffaello Sansori Riario<\/strong>, the statue depicts the Roman god of wine positioned confidently in front of a satyr eating grapes from his hand, but his drunken portrayal was ultimately dismissed by its original commissioner. Representing an early stage in Michelangelo\u2019s artistic career, the statue is important in understanding his development and influence as one of the most renowned artists in history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.romeing.it\/florence\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Tondo-Pitti-Michelangelo-Buonarroti-analisi.jpeg\" alt=\"Michelangelo in Florence\" class=\"wp-image-3685\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Standing in addition to <em>The Bacchus<\/em> are three other works attributed to Michelangelo: <strong><em>Brutus, Pitti Tondo<\/em><\/strong><em>, <\/em>and <strong><em>David-Apollo<\/em><\/strong><em>, <\/em>each with a unique style and subject. Following Michelangelo\u2019s statues are works by other notable artists from this period, including the bronze <strong><em>Ganymede <\/em><\/strong>by <strong>Benvenuto Cellini <\/strong>as well as the original base of the <strong><em>Perseus, <\/em><\/strong>commissioned by Duke Cosimo I de\u2019 Medici to symbolize his power, intricately carved in both marble and bronze with various symbols and mythological figures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The First Floor<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>After ascending the first staircase of the museum, you will find yourself surrounded by sculptures from the <strong>Middle Ages, Renaissance,<\/strong> and <strong>Baroque periods<\/strong>, as well as historical items collected by the <strong>Medicis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Ivories Room <\/strong>displays at its center valuable ivory pieces dating from the<strong> Etruscan era (4th century BC &#8211; 4th century AD) <\/strong>to the 14th and 15th centuries. Intricate figurines, religious icons, diptychs, and ornaments fill the space, as well as an impressive ivory sculpture of the <strong>Madonna and Child<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next to this is the <strong>Medieval Sculpture Room<\/strong>, with works from the late 13th to late 14th centuries. The viewer is transported back to the Middle Ages as they find themselves surrounded by notable works by <strong>Arnolfo di Cambio <\/strong>and<strong> Tino di Camaino;<\/strong> panels from the church of <strong>Orsanmichele<\/strong> by <strong>Giovanni di Balduccio<\/strong>; sculptures by <strong>Piero di Giovanni Tedesco.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moving on, you will enter the room of <strong>Maiolica<\/strong>, which presents itself as an expansive showcase of Italian craftsmanship from the 14th to 20th centuries. The room is dedicated to the decorative ceramic characterized by a distinct glazing technique, with items used for everyday life and special occasions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will also encounter the <strong>Carrand Collection, <\/strong>which features paintings, sculptures, jewelry, metalwork, and other artistic works collected by <strong>Jean-Baptiste Pierre Antoine Carrand, <\/strong>offering a display of artistic expression that spans centuries and cultures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f0f2f4\"><span style=\"color: #dd3333;\"><strong>INSPIRATION<\/strong><\/span><br><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.romeing.it\/florence\/best-museums-in-florence\/\">The Best Museums In Florence<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Bargello Chapel<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.romeing.it\/florence\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/cappella-maria-maddalena-museo-del-bargello.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4257\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Built in the 14th century, the <strong>Bargello Chapel<\/strong> is famed for the discovery of several now-depleted frescoes by <strong>Giotto<\/strong>, including the oldest known portrait of <strong>Dante<\/strong>. The entrance to the chapel shows a depiction of Hell. On one wall are the stories of Mary Magdalene, and on the back wall is Christ the Judge and Paradise. Several glazed terracotta works fill the space with vibrant hues of blue, green, and yellow.
