Exhibition at Rome’s Gagosian Gallery
Rome’s Gagosian Gallery will showcase the artistic brilliance of iconic photographer Richard Avedon in its new exhibition “Avedon: Beyond Beauty.” The exhibition follows the progression of Avedon’s career, with an emphasis on his creative depictions of women. The distinct images displayed speak to Avedon’s incredible influence on the world of fashion and beauty photography.
The exhibition follows the development of Avedon’s career in photography. It begins with eleven photos from Harper’s Bazaar’s “Early Paris Fashion Portfolio” and follows his creativity through the 1960s, a time when most of Avedon’s portrait work was produced inside his stark white studio. The exhibition ends with Avedon’s colorful fashion portfolio completed during his time as a photographer for The New Yorker.
Avedon’s most notable pieces have been featured in Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue and The New Yorker and remain in collections at the Smithsonian and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. His photographs are defined by the unique messages they provoke in the minds of viewers, and the images also capture the trusting relationship between Avedon and his subjects. His portraits, street work and fashion photographs redefine the meaning of beauty with distinct imagery and impact.
