Romaeuropa Festival’s November events

The last month of Romaeuropa festival has arrived, but don’t worry, the jam-packed line-up of the 33rd edition is set to delight, inspire and entertain all ages till the 25th of November. This month there are also numerous children’s events, held at Mattatoio Testaccio, under the umbrella REF Kids. A dazzling array of theatre, dance, circus, art, technology and music will be showcased at 27 different venues throughout the city. Hundreds of artists from 24 different countries will come together to create a kaleidoscope of expressive forms that investigates the concept of boundaries and frontiers between people. PANORAMA, the Motus’ Enrico Casagrande and Daniela Nicolò latest production, questions people’s motion and migration together with research on post-nationalistic identity. The show is indeed a collective and visionary biography of the interethnic group of performers belonging to the legendary theatre in the New York East Village, founded by Ellen Stewart: La Mama.

The Gospel according to the other Mary

With The Gospel According to the Other Mary (2014 Pulitzer Prize-winning finalist for music), American John Adams tackles the theme of the Passion of Christ. This story, a pillar of Western culture, passed down for millennia all over the world, is addressed by one of the best-known and most-appreciated composers, who focuses his attention on Mary Magdalene and her siblings Martha and Lazarus.

Born from the collaboration between Daniele Del Monaco with some musicians from New York – which core (formed by the Marco Cappelli Acoustic Trio with Marco Cappelli, guitar – Ken Filiano, doublebass – Satoshi Takeishi, percussion) is completed by Fay Victor and Marc Ribot – The Zone is a Sufi odyssey that, with a punk spirit, moves away from the adolescent clichés, constructing tones within its seven songs that are austere and dark, violent yet very sweet, being able to restore poetic value and depth to the concept of ritual.

Every weekend from 9-25 November, Romaeuropa Festival hosts numerous children’s events, called REF Kids, at the Mattatoio Testaccio.
The family-friendly events, aimed at kids up to the age of 12, range from circus and music to dance and theatre.

Classical training combined with a modern spirit – the aptitude of Fabrizio Ottaviucci as an interpreter and composer could be summed up with this apparent dichotomy. Graduating with flying colours in piano from the Conservatory in Pesaro, the artist went on to explore the world of electronic composition and music. It is in this dual role of interpreter of the classical/contemporary and modern composer/improviser that Ottaviucci has performed in major cities around Italy and the world. Collaborating with prestigious partners, such as the German composer and musician Markus Stockhausen (son of the famous Karlheinz) with whom he has worked extensively since 1986.

dison Studio, the group, formed in 1993 by Mauro Cardi, Luigi Ceccarelli, Fabio Cifariello Ciardi and Alessandro Cipriani that is revolutionising the concept of soundtracking, with music composed for the great masterpieces of international cinema, are back to REf18. In collaboration with the Bologna Film Library, the group focuses on Sergei Mikhailovich Eisenstein’s Battleship Potëmkin, one of the most accomplished cinematographic expressions of the last century due to its technical and aesthetic values, considered one of the essential movies in cinematographic history.

The new composition of Tempo Reale is not comprised of stringed or wind instruments, nor keyboards or percussion. Rather, SYMPHONY DEVICE is a concert of blenders, gramophones, televisions and other household appliances used on a daily basis, some obsolete and some brand new. the group of musicians started to investigate the way in which such objects can influence our gestures and our soundscapes. Altered or technologically modified, the sounds produced by these particular instruments are ultimately composed within a surprising and unexpected symphony.

Born from the meeting of two masters in international performative creation is Nudità (Nudity) – a theatrical dialogue between the art of dance, embodied by Virgilio Sieni, and that of the Opera dei Pupi represented by Mimmo Cuticchio. But who is guiding the show? The traditional Sicilian puppet and the storyteller or the dancer and choreographer? When they grasp each other, they are forced to let themselves be abandoned by these bodies, in being placed in arms or on shoulders, when they barely touch each other, metamorphose occurs. And for the finale, everything is ready to seem transfigured: the body, the voice, the sound; the human being.

The relationship between classicism and contemporary languages, so central in the artistic research undertaken by Anagoor (who was also part of this edition of the festival with Oresteia) is dedicated to the performance hosted by REf18 at Palazzo Barberini, in the grand salon frescoed by Pietro da Cortona. A place permeated by history in which the Italian troupe, one of the most appreciated of its generation, presents Et Manchi Pietà. Artemisia Gentileschi and the music of her time together with Accademia d’Arcadia.

MINEFIELD brings Argentine and British veterans of the Malvinas War together to explore what has remained in their heads, thirty-six years later. The theatre is a film set or a time machine that takes us back to the war to reconstruct the memories of its protagonists – Lou Armor, Rubén Otero, David Jackson, Gabriel Sagastume, Sukrim Rai, Marcelo Vallejo. Survivors and heroes, victims and enforcers.

Inspired by the Italian street theatre and Stravisnkij’s Historie du Soldat, Ronchetti rewrites his Pinocchio as light and fundamental form in a chamber work. Staged in different spaces (in this case, the Octagon Aula of the Baths of Diocletian), the show allows children to come close to the characters and spontaneously interact with the musicians.

Their latest show, DFS, is the continuation of this bizarre study combining traditional techniques and styles with contemporary practices, in which dance becomes a generational expressive form of resistance to new oppressive ideologies. In DFS, five dancers and artists from the Jamaican dancehall scene meet on stage to contrast singing and various dance techniques.
