The 35th edition of the Florence Dance Festival continues until July 23.
The Florence Dance Festival began its 2024 season on June 20th, filling the summer nights with artistic expression and enthralling performances at the at the Chiostro Maggiore of Santa Maria Novella.
Founders and directors Marga Nativo and Keith Ferrone have brought talent from all over the world, including Belgian dance company Peeping Tom, the Zhong Zheng Senior High Dance team of Taipei, and Irish choreographer Oona Doherty.
July’s shows cover a variety of themes that every creative mind can appreciate. Italian filmmaker Elisabetta Sgarbi will present her project Milanese Evening on July 6th at 9:30 pm, showing how dance can evoke power, desire, and individuality.
Hip hop choreographer Gigi Nieddu directs a dance piece titled Noi-a, which explores how the body is affected by boredom and the clichés of everyday life. This show begins at 9:30 pm, as do all the shows in the festival, on July 8th.
If you’re looking for more traditional dance on Santa Maria Novella’s circular stage, make sure to catch Preludes…danze al pianoforte, a collection of ballet pieces set to the music of iconic composers such as Claude Debussy and Johann Sebastian Bach. Skilled dancers Anbeta Toromani, Alessandro Macario, Amilcar Moret Gonzalez, and Sofia Vasheruk will grace the stage on July 12th.
Ticket prices vary from €16.50 to €22.00 for each dance performance.
Beyond dance, the Florence Dance Festival will put on side shows highlighting different forms of performance in July. The Festival in the Desert is one of them. On July 21st, the ancient sounds of Indian and Mailan cultures will meld to create a musical collaboration that celebrates each ethnicity’s individuality and traditions while embracing the creation of a new sound and community.
Nearing the end of the season, the Florentine Chamber Orchestra will cover hits from the King of Pop in a Tribute to Michael Jackson on July 22nd.
The Florence Dance Festival has organized this season’s program in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Tuscany Region, Metropolitan City of Florence, Municipality of Florence, and the Estate Fiorentina 2024.
