Open-Air Film Screenings Under the Stars

Sit back, relax, and let yourself be transported to a new world in Florence this summer with film screenings happening all around the city. With the birthplace of the Renaissance as your backdrop, you can watch new releases and auteur films in one-of-a-kind open air theaters. Piazzas, museums, and courtyards are transformed to accommodate screenings of a variety of international and Italian movies.

Apriti Cinema – Piazzale degli Uffizi

From June 26 to August 6, the iconic Piazzale degli Uffizi is hosting its 12th edition of Apriti Cinema, showcasing films in their original languages with subtitles in Italian, and occasionally English. Organized by the Quelli dell’Alfieri Association, spectacular films from many of Florence’s notable film festivals will be shown across 40 evenings. In addition to screenings, Apriti Cinema has organized several special events, including reviews and guest appearances from directors and critics. Don’t miss out on an incredible night of cinema in one of Florence’s most historic locations!

Cinema nel Chiostro at Sant’Orsola

This summer, Cinema in the Cloister brings the Sant’Orsola complex back to life. The event features screenings of auteur films from the past season on a 9x4m screen in a 150-seat space set up in the main courtyard of Sant’Orsola, with retrospectives and guests who will meet the summer arena audience. This initiative has numerous goals, including deepening the understanding of cinema and culture in general and enhancing the value of often forgotten places in the city.

Cinema Chiardiluna in Oltrarno

Enjoy a magical night of movie-viewing in the beautiful outdoor summer theater at Via Monte Oliveto from June 13 to mid September. Films from around the world will be screened at Cinema Chiardiluna, including some of the most successful pictures of the year. Special guests will also make appearances. Cinema Chiardiluna is screening something for everyone this summer, with Italian and European films being shown at a discounted rate of 3.50 euros.

Esterno Notte at Poggetto

Surrounded by lush vegetation, Esterno Notte at Poggetto is showing films from June 16 to August 31 beginning around 9:30. With over 50 of the season’s best films being screened, this is the perfect setting for a casual date or a fun night with friends and family. Be sure to stop by the ice cream and snack bar for a treat while you enjoy a film in the beautiful, verdant arena.

Non Solo Cinema in Manifattura Tabacchi

From June 25 to August 28, Non Solo Cinema in Manifattura returns to the Cortile della Ciminiera with a program of screenings and events curated by the Stensen Foundation. The program features classic titles, new discoveries, and thematic explorations, a selection of films and documentaries in Italian and in the original language with subtitles, talks, presentations, and Preludio, the preview of the music festival Lasciati Fiorire curated by the Fiore sul Vulcano Association. Every Thursday in June and July, the screening is at 11:30 PM with free admission.

Arena Castello

Beginning June 14, the popular Cinema Castello is screening films each night beginning at 9:30pm in the courtyard of the Arci Club, including special guest appearances and performances. European films are being shown Friday – Wednesday at a reduced rate of 3.50 euros. If you go between Thursday and Sunday, you can enjoy a pizza, beer, and film for just 12 euros. Don’t miss out!

Cinema in Villa at Giardino Bardini

From July 9 to August 29, the Belvedere Terrace of Giardino Bardini will be the setting of the Cinema in Villa film festival for the fifth year, with around 50 screenings, reviews, and guest appearances being showcased. Films will be shown in their original languages, with most offering English subtitles. On Wednesdays, families can enjoy free screenings with a reservation, and tickets for Italian and European films are only 3.50 euros. Relax and relish in a night of cinema in one of Florence’s most historical gardens with a breathtaking view of the city.

Estate Fiesolana – Cinema in Teatro Romano di Fiesole

One of Italy’s most impressive open-air cinemas, Teatro Romano di Fiesole has been showcasing films for many years, and is a one of a kind movie-going experience. The film program has not yet been announced, so stay updated for more details through their website.
