Mauro Rosi Vanni has been an artist for 40 years, beginning his academic training with technical drawing and architectural sketches. A gentle and charming character he exudes Italian culture, walking his dog in Villa Borghese and collecting his children from school in one of Rome’s oldest churches. Perhaps Calliope, the muse of Ancient Rome was in the air as he started painting to satisfy some internal instinct. At first friends responded to his art work, soon expanding into a world of admirers whose support has established his career.
With a dynamic style, his most impressive pieces are oil paintings that capture the essence of life in Rome, flowers in a Prati windowpane or a chiaroscuro detail of the Trevi fountain. He experiments with traditional and more abstract compositions, such as a cubist compilation of Rome’s most spectacular monuments. He does considered and intimate portraiture work, playful illustrations of animals and pets as well as thoughtful still life paintings. The use of colour is what unites his collection of work, bright and energetic they have a presence in a room. The price of oil paintings depends, but ranges between €250-450.
But you can also find lithographs of his paintings in almost all of the major bookshops from Rome to Venice, including the Vatican Museum and Uffizi. These prints are delightfully charismatic renderings of Italian land and cityscapes, colourful capturings of Italy’s heritage. They are the perfect souvenir and can be purchased on his website for the very reasonable price of €30. His most affordable pieces have affectionately been named “the miniatures” and are sold for €10.
As an extensive traveller, Vanni has paintings from all over the world, with quiet renderings of London’s fog and romantic rain splattered boulevards in Paris. Most often Vanni is found cycling the streets of Rome, camera in hand, looking for inspiration. The secret, he says, is to find the real Rome, under the superficial glory of the city is a broken window shutter in Trastevere or unruly ivy growing over the cobblestones of Monti. For Mauro, taking lead of the Impressionists, photography is a powerful tool which allows you to stop time and steal forever a frame from life.
