Rome’s MAXXI, or National Museum of the 21st-century arts, goes beyond art exhibits: it also hosts winter screenings of family-friendly flicks, documentaries, new releases, foreign and short films, and auteur works.
The proposals for this edition:

This year’s surprise is the Extra Doc Festival, a competition of twelve edited and unpublished Italian documentaries selected from world premiers and works that have come to light in main festivals. “Best Italian Documentary of the Year” and the best new “Extra Doc CityFest” will be awarded. The jury is composed of Hou Hanru (Chairman), Susanna Nicchiarelli, Flavia Perina, Elena Radonicich, Christian Raimo and Lidia Ravera.
GRAVITY & HOME BEIRUT: Three sections and three different film proposals
Gravity is a tribute to the work of Christopher Nolan, on the occasion of the exhibition “Gravity. Imagine the Universe after Einstein “, which will be held until April 29th. The exhibition is combined with the National Geographic exhibition, a marathon of documentaries from the library of one of the most important and authoritative scientific institutions worldwide. While the Home Beirut series is connected to the “Home Beirut exhibition. Sounding the Neighbors “, open to the public till next May 20. Cinema at MAXXI will screen five exciting auteur films, from Ari Folman to Denis Villeneuve, which have Beirut as a geopolitical and symbolic place.
EVENTI SPECIALI: Special programs & live music performances to accompany the screenings
The program hosts three works that tackle many journeys: those of Alien Daniélou, in Indian culture and spirituality; Marco Ferreri, explorer of the image and of contemporaneity; Francesco Jovine, the rediscovery of rural and peasant civilization.
IMPERDIBILI: A new chance for high-value films ignored by the distribution
Films of considerable depth, strong originality, surprising language, form and story that movie theaters have not been able to exploit.
INCONTRI: Famous Italian and international personalities meet with the public
One of the most awaited traditions of Cinema at MAXXI. There will be three major appointments in store. The first with Luciano Ligabue, on the occasion of the release of his new work, “Made in Italy”; we continue with the director Rezo Gigineishvili who will introduce the screening of his new film, “Hostages”, presented at the last Film Festival. The last meeting will be with Gabriele Muccino, author of films like “The Last Kiss”, “The Pursuit of Happiness” and “Seven Pounds”, who will retrace the most important moments of his career with the audience.
