Roma Jazz Festival: Jazz is now
The Roma Jazz Festival returns to its summer location for its 42nd edition. For 35 days, over 170 musicians will perform in 4 locations around the city, making this event one of the most important and long-lived Italian realities.
Curated by the artistic director Mario Ciampà, this year’s program has a lot in store and crosses an arc of at least three generations, defining the path taken up till now, and analyzing the proposals that will contribute to creating the jazz sound of the future. The selected locations represent two guarantees – Auditorium Parco della Musica and Casa del Jazz, where major national and international artists will performe – and two new ones, Museo MAXXI and Parterre – Farnesina Social Garden which will welcome emerging artists from New York jazz and London.
From Enrico Rava & Danilo Rea (1 July) to Snarky Puppy (7 July), from Camille Bertault (11 July) to Tony Allen (13 July), from Chick Corea (14 July) to Knower (16 July), from Stefano Bollani (16 July) to Randy Weston (19 July), from Pat Metheny (20 July) to Cory Henry (23 July), and from Dee Dee Bridgewater (24 July) to Steve Coleman (27 July), from Sons of Kemet (1 Aug) to Lizz Wright (3 Aug), great music, creativity, contaminations, new sounds, fun, emotions will be at the center of this great festival.
The festival will try to tackle some important questions such as: what happened to jazz in these past years? How has it evolved? Who were the central figures that allowed this music to go through a hundred years of history, and how is the legacy of these protagonists constantly modeled and contextualized by their heirs to be usable, understandable and contemporary?
The artistic director Mario Ciampà says that “with the festival’s program, floating between the past, present and future, we will try to answer these questions. In this edition, young talents and emerging artists will be protagonists just as much as the big names of jazz on the international scene.”
This edition will tackle the past, present and future of Jazz on the road to rediscover the Neo Soul of Afrobeat and R&B.
